personality
(sadistic (enjoys others' pain), protector, enjoys learning useful information, a bit of a bully but hates bullies so keeps a tight rein on those tendencies (tries not to CAUSE pain unless he believes the victim really "deserves" it), mildly irritable but generally calm, believes himself possessed/evil/hell-bound but also that it was a trade he made willingly to protect others and doesn't regret it, semi-religious Christian in belief but non-practicing (due to that aforementioned hell-bound belief), a bit persnickety/crotchety (though he would object to "crotchety" as he's "not that old"), asexual,)
history
(father preacher in 1760s British colonies, convinces congregation to run off into the wilds with him to found Zion, proceeds to be a crazy asshole to them all, son Henry finally has enough (when father murders mother) and makes up a "satanic" ritual (since he believes his father has God in his corner already), then fortified by his belief that he's made a deal with the devil his abilities kick in and he survives burning his father and the church to the ground; relationship with the townsfolk and becoming a doctor, keeping his medical training current, protecting the townsfolk from those who would bully them; hid from the army during the Civil War to stay and help the townsfolk, ran the KKK out of his town once he determined the black newcomers weren't actually hurting anybody, not much interested in political matters but tried to help people qualify for voting anyway due to the bullying nature of the poll-tax laws etc.)(is the town "secret"; he's unofficially above the law and every town-native knows it)
